Overview
This face-to-face session will share key findings on calming corners in preschool settings, including educator perceptions, benefits, challenges, and implications for classroom practice. Participants will also be given insight into additional resources and training opportunities for educators interested in creating and using calming spaces effectively in early childhood classrooms. As a result, participants will gain a better understanding of how calming corners can support children’s self-regulation and participation in the classroom, while also considering West Virginia educators’ perceptions and how they use these spaces in early childhood settings.  
Objective
1.3  Encourages children's development of social and emotional skills 
1.3 j. Finds ways to help children feel successful, identify and pursue interests, and develop a sense of personal identity
1.3 k. Uses empathy to help children recognize and understand their emotions
1.3 n. Helps children build upon their strengths and work on their challenges
1.4  Helps children achieve self-regulation and develop coping skills

Creates an environment and provides strategies that help children: Manage strong emotions and calm themselves' Focus their attention to remain actively engaged with activities and materials' Read the signals of the environment to learn how to respond appropriately' Cope with fear, anger, and frustration' Use language to share their needs' Consider the needs of others' Use problem-solving and conflict resolution strategies
1.4 j. Investigates and provides for children’s sensory preferences
4.2  Creates an environment that is predictable, promotes interaction and learning, and is responsive to the needs of all children
4.2 a. Plans, implements, and adapts a supportive learning environment that promotes children’s safety, positive interactions, and behaviors
4.2 d. Makes sure expectations for routines and tasks are clear and purposeful for all children
4.2 n. Demonstrates knowledge and applies current theories and research on environmental design
