Overview
Literacy skills begin in infancy and continue to develop through the teenage years. Reading with children of all ages supports future academic success. During this training session, participants will explore the latest research on improving language and literacy skills through reading. Participants will leave with tips for reading to children of all ages, strategies for creating an environment that encourages reading, and a list of developmentally appropriate books. This face-to-face course is for all early childhood educators working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children.
Objective

1.8 Promotes emergent literacy including speaking, listening, reading, and writing through play and interaction with children

1.8 a. Understands that early literacy skills begin in infancy

1.8 b. Creates an environment where children have access to a variety of developmentally appropriate objects and materials to support early and emergent literacy

1.8 c. Provides opportunities for children to see adults reading and using written language for a variety of purposes

1.8 g. Provides a variety of opportunities for children to develop vocabulary and build knowledge through shared reading
