Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Young Child: Sensory, Self-Regulation and Learning

Overview
This face-to-face session will provide participants with information on the latest ASD prevalence data and diagnostic criteria from the CDC, while further exploring a range of characteristics inherent to the diagnosis and their impact on the individual. Specifically, we will explore how the sensory system and self-regulation impact learning and discuss proactive strategies to support the child in meeting their sensory needs appropriately and developing the necessary skills to support active, positive engagement in all environments. This training is for NCWVCAA HEAD STAR STAFF ONLY.
Objective
1.4 Helps children achieve self-regulation and develop coping skills. 
1.4 h. Analyzes and adjusts expectations and activities based on the child’s ongoing needs and energy levels
1.4 i. Provides an adequate level of stimulation for children, keeping them interested without overwhelming them
4.2 Creates an environment that is predictable, promotes interaction and learning, and is responsive to the needs of all children. 
4.2 a. Plans, implements, and adapts a supportive learning environment that promotes children’s safety, positive interactions, and behaviors
4.2 b. Designs schedules that are predictable but flexible 
4.2 c. Establishes clear, consistent, and realistic boundaries based on developmentally appropriate expectations
4.2 d. Makes sure expectations for routines and tasks are clear and purposeful for all children
4.2 e. Teaches the steps involved in routines and tasks (i.e., repeats directions, provides visual support while giving directions, uses visual and/or verbal prompts to help children follow through when necessary)
